SavageFest...It was the summer of 2020, the early days of COVID and the beginning of shutdowns and limited live music events in the venues around Calgary, that SavageFest was born. Grant Straub, who is a retired military veteran and a member of the Scarecrows band, was approached and offered by his good friend Simon Savage, who is also a retired military veteran, his acreage for a safe outdoor location to allow the band a place to rehearse. While rehearsing, the surrounding neighbors enjoyed the sound of hearing live music and Simon suggested having a live outdoor music concert on his property for family and friends. While planning this small event, Grant, along with Simon and a few of his close military buddies, jokingly came up with a name “SavageFest” naming it after Simon’s last name Savage. Approximately 80 close friends and family attended as the Scarecrows band put on a show under a small leaking tent during a rainstorm causing the breakers in the barn to blow and lose all power. Eventually, the rain subsided, and the Scarecrows rocked the night away. In 2021, the Scarecrows decided to do another SavageFest but this time they were going to ramp up the event a little bigger and also plan for potential bad weather. A stage was built underneath a hay shed shelter, a large tent was erected for spectators and a single food truck was brought in for those hungry spectators. Many also decided to camp out in tents and campers on the property. The Scarecrows also invited a few local musicians to open the show. It was this year that Grant had decided that SavageFest needed to also do something for the community, and being a military veteran and proud Canadian, decided to develop SavageFest into a music festival fundraiser supporting the Veterans Food Bank of Calgary. SavageFest grew to approximately 200 spectators. There was a raffle and donations, SavageFest T-Shirts sold and a collection of food for the food bank. Due to the popularity and growth of SavageFest in 2021, it was decided to host another SavageFest in 2022. Like the pervious years, the event was ramped up even more with yet another larger stage, professional sound and production, several more food trucks, raffles, prizes, onsite camping and three more music bands to join the Scarecrows in putting on SavageFest which again was in support of the Veterans Food Bank of Calgary. As predicted, due to word of mouth and some advertising, SavageFest grew to approximately 500 spectators. Unfortunately, Simon sold his acreage at the end of 2022, but this did not mean the end of SavageFest. The hunt for a new home and location to host SavageFest was on. Grant and the Scarecrows band met with and formed a new partnership with the Crossfield Rodeo Society and together promises to put on the best SavageFest yet in the beautiful town of Crossfield. This year SavageFest will be supporting our military veterans Homes For Heros Foundation.
